RedDecoy  Kennel

We have owned and loved Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retrievers for over 30 years. In 1997, our dream of breeding them became a reality when we registered RedDecoy Kennel with the Canadian Kennel Club.  We are a small kennel and our objective as kennel owners is to promote the breed as an all round dog suitable for all aspects of the dog world, including obedience, field work, agility and as a family pet.

As Breeders, we are dedicated to improving the health of the breed while following the CKC Standard for the Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever as closely as possible. It is our intention to produce a sound dog who is a natural retriever with a happy disposition that will appeal to all ages. We usually only have one litter a year.

All Red Decoy Kennel Tollers are Hip-Certified clear of hip dysplasia. They have been Slit Lamp eye-tested clear of inherited eye problems and have been Optigen-tested for PRA eye problems.

We have put Canine Good neighbour Tests, Obedience and Field Titles as well as Championships on several Tollers and German Shepherds. We also have trained our dogs for Agility and Flyball. We have trained and tested our tollers for upland game, Working Certificate and Hunt Tests.

We are members of the Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever Club of Canada, The Canadian Kennel Club, The Eastern Flyway Hunting Retriever Club, Glooscap Kennel Club and The Evangeline Kennel Club, which is our local all-breed club.

We encourage all dog owners to do obedience training and retrieving with their puppies, as a trained dog makes a well-behaved companion at home or when you take him/her anywhere. Tollers love people, especially their families and prefer to be with them.

All our puppies are raised in the family home, they are well socialized to people, children, other pets and normal household sounds noise and activities.  Before going to their new homes they are thoroughly checked by our Veterinarian, given their first shots, de-wormed, tattooed and registered with the Canadian Kennel Club.

Most of our puppies are sold by reservation and we do have a waiting list.   We require written proof that all Red Decoy puppies sold on the CKC  Non-Breeding Contract have been spayed or neutered within one year.  We do have a buyer questionnaire, to make sure our puppies are going to the best possible homes and ensure that you understand that Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retrievers are intelligent, active dogs who require daily exercise.  If your are interested in finding out  more about our kennel or filling out our questionnaire to be on our waiting list, e-mail us at the address below.

ABOUT TOLLERS
These flashy little red dogs, also known as "Tollers" or "Little River Duck Dogs", make great family dogs which can also be used for bird hunting, as well as all other dog sports.  They are of medium size and enjoy the outdoors.  Being friendly and good with children, they also make great house pets for young and old alike. Smart, alert and easy to train, "Tollers" are well suited to all types of dog activities.  It must be pointed out that these are active dogs who require at least a moderate amount of daily exercise.  If you have a fenced yard, this is easily accomplished  with a stick or a ball, as they are natural retrievers.   They have a medium length, double coat which should be brushed weekly.

OUR PAST

"Scampie"

We acquired our first Toller as a pet for our children, through an ad in the newspaper.   Upon visiting the puppies we immediately fell in love with that small fuzzy ball of energy.  "Scampie" was our family pet for almost 14 years.
********

("Muffin")

"Brandy of Littleriver, CD"
We soon discovered we missed having a Toller so much we just had to have another one.  Muffin was a very active Toller.  We took her to obedience classes and the instructor suggested we join a dog club and enter her in an obedience trial at the local dog show.  Needless to say, that was our introduction to the "Wonderful World of Showing and Training Dogs."
********

("Brandy")
In 1993 we became co-owners of a male Toller - "Brandy" who originally came from Marangai Kennels.

"Ch. Marangai's Little Man Big Man, CD"
Brandy earned his Championship in 1993 and also became involved in Freestyle Agility and Flyball. Brandy was to be our foundation Dog, but was found to have PRA. He did earn three points toward his Flyball Title and also attained his CD. Brandy appeared in Halifax Superdogs in 1995 and 1996.

She was the proud mom of 31 puppies from five litters.

"Magic"

"Hebridy's A Magic Moment, CD"
Magic was Wendy's first obedience dog, earned her CD and was in training for CDX.
She did English Agility, Flyball, Freestyle Agility and knew lots of parlor tricks.
Magic was our "home guard dog" for seven years before losing her fight with thyroid cancer.
She was a wonderful friend and will never be forgotten.

"Hanna"

"Ch.  Hanna"
Hanna came to live with us when she was three.  David showed her to her Championship and as a Special she won many group placements. She loved to work in the show ring for her Junior Handlers too.  At home Hanna learned to sit, down, stay and shake hands.  Living with Tollers, she also became a reliable retriever.  She was with us till she was almost 12 years old.
